The purpose of the spline/worm worm joint assembly is that should the handpiece ''lockup'' the corkscrew design of the joint disengages the handpiece from the solid drive.

Most UK farmers still use the standard pin drive whilst most new shearers going through training colleges and courses will use spline/worm drive.
